Joining The Sixth Form

We recognise that the process of finding the right Sixth Form is not an easy one for some, as the choice of institutions is great, as is the difference between them and what they offer.

Numbers of applicants for The Grange Sixth Form have grown over recent years, both from other independent and, increasingly, maintained schools. We encourage those interested to attend our Open Day held in September if possible, but it is by no means necessary to have done so.

If you chose to make an application we will allocate you a place on one of our Sixth Form Introductory Days, which we arrange from November onwards. There are normally three of these, open to eight applicants on each occasion, though we can put on more if necessary. The purpose of the day is for students to have an in depth look at The Grange by touring the school, attending up to 4 lessons in prospective A-level subjects, speaking with existing students (including those who have themselves joined at 16), and meeting the relevant Heads of Department. In addition, the school has the chance to assess both the aptitude and attitude of all candidates with a view to making an offer of a place where appropriate.

Sixth Form offers are normally based on the expectation that candidates will achieve an A* or A grade in those subjects that they wish to take further (or, if those subjects are new, in an equivalent subject e.g. History or English Lit for Philosophy), and at least B grades in five more subjects. Offers are made soon after Introductory Days; a firm commitment to those offers is necessary before we can factor an individual's needs into our timetabling, and thus be sure to be able offer them the combination of choices they seek.

Applying to The Sixth Form

Applications may be received throughout the year. Students will be contacted by the school and asked to come with their parents for an introductory day. General Application Forms are sent out with the prospectus, and a specific Sixth Form Application Form is available in the Sixth Form prospectus (available on request). Both of these should be returned by post; alternatively both General and Sixth Form application can be downloaded and submitted.
