The Grange Junior School admits boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 10 years old. Demand for places is high at all levels, and places are offered to children who demonstrate evidence that they will thrive within the stimulating atmosphere and expectations of the school.
Our major intake is at 4+, where we take in three classes of ‘rising fives' into our Kindergarten, most of whom have attended local nurseries or similar pre-school provision. The Kindergarten Assessment, which takes place early in the Spring Term, provides the major means of assessment of suitability at this stage of entry: parents and children are invited into school to familiarise themselves with the school, to meet and work with staff and, we hope, to start their transition to ‘big school'.
Classrooms in The Grange Kindergarten and Pre-Prep burst with life. Perhaps children are listening to stories or beginning to learn the joy of personal reading; perhaps they are preparing for dance exams or coaxing the first real musical sounds from an ocarina; perhaps they are investigating how butterflies transform from caterpillars, or getting ready to explore outside in the nature area, or enjoying the pleasure that can come with discovering numbers and with getting things right! In the Hall at PE time, there are songs to sing, or there is good food to eat at lunch. Outside, the play equipment fires young imaginations, games are learned, and friendships developed. All of these wonderful experiences combine to provide a warm and lively environment in which our youngest pupils take their first and most crucial steps.
The children are really happy. They have the structure and direction which they need to make the very most of work and play, as well as the freedom they need to learn at their own pace. There are so many chances to discover new experiences and talents both in and out of the classroom; no opportunity is missed. Great emphasis is placed on developing social skills and respectful relationships; politeness and good manners are valued. Underpinning all of these are the close and warm relationships between teaching staff, pupils and parents which ensure that school and home work together to meet the needs of each individual child, and to provide a first class start to school life!
Applications to start in Kindergarten in the September following a child's fourth birthday should be made directly to the Junior School.
The Assessment Day for entry in September 2012 will take place on the 28th January 2012.
Application Forms are sent out with the prospectus and should be posted to the school, but can also be completed on-line and submitted. Download the application_form here.
Arrangements will then be made with you regarding the Assessment Morning; to secure a place on that morning a non-refundable fee of £40 will be required. Following the Assessment, places will usually be offered within ten days.
For children wishing to apply to the school for other year groups there are monthly assessments. There is limited availability of places. Please call Mandy Shaw, the Junior School Admissions Secretary on 01606 77447 for details or send an e-mail to the link below.
