His time for the 400m freestyle of 4:02.24 beat a record that was set a quarter of a century ago by former Olympian Steven Mellor. Ashley also set new county records in the 100m and 200m butterfly, 200m breaststroke, 200m and 400m individual medley and 1,500m freestyle.
"What he has achieved is phenomenal. In terms of county records, it's probably the most impressive I've seen. He's so single minded and thrives on the pressure of expectation. It's a special quality that you only see in the very best athletes," commented Ashley's coach at Winsford swimming club, Dave Pettengell, quoted in the Northwich Guardian.
