The author let the children into her creative writing secrets, from initial inspiration to construction of an exciting plot and engaging characters. In the afternoon pupils got to put her hints and tips into practice as Julia set them the challenge of exploring what it would be like to be swallowed whole by a snake in a zoo – a scenario which occurs in one of her books.
Julia’s best known book is probably ‘The Big Red Bath,’ a book for toddlers which has been turned into a successful stage show. However, she has written over 60 books suitable for a wide age range. She focused particularly on her book ‘Pillywiggins and the Tree Witch’ during her visit to the school.
