Quarry Bank Mill

Pupils in Prep 6 visited Quarry Bank Mill as part of a History project on Victorian Mills.

They learned about the hardships and dangers experienced by the Victorian youngsters who worked there, including the children who were obliged to risk being crushed by the machines, and the ‘Piecers’ who had to rub stray pieces of cotton together until their hands were red and raw.

In the Apprentice House they made up straw beds in the replica dormitory, and, in the kitchen, they saw the thick, gloopy porridge that comprised the staple diet of the Victorian children.
