Choral Evensong at Chester Cathedral

50 members of the school’s senior choir, Cantores Roborienses, travelled to Chester Cathedral to sing Choral Evensong in November.

This moving and reflective evening service takes place every day in our cathedrals, and it was a privilege for the choir to maintain the centuries-old tradition at Chester for a day. On arrival we enjoyed the chance to rehearse in the generous acoustics of the cathedral – a great opportunity to put the finishing touches to our performances which included the psalms for the day, the Preces and Responses by John Sanders, Basil Harwood’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A flat and the well-known anthem ‘Zadok the Priest’ by Handel, which has been sung at every Coronation since it was written.

It was good to see so many parents and friends of the choir in the congregation as we processed in to Evensong, and we were made very welcome by the cathedral’s Precentor, Canon Jeremy Dussek. Director of Music Andrew Millinchip commented, “This will probably be the last time I conduct Cantores Roborienses in our local cathedral, and I was proud of the amazing standards achieved by our choir, soloists, and organist Mr Chris Stubbs.”
