Flash Fiction en Español

Senior School students in Years II and III channelled their inner Cervantes when they took part in an Oxford University creative writing competition with a twist – all entries should be in Spanish!

The university’s Modern and Medieval Languages Department launched the competition requesting creative stories of no more than 100 words in Spanish. The challenge was enthusiastically embraced by 20 ambitious students of Spanish and provided the opportunity to enrich their language learning with new skills and independent research. Miss Arbonés (Spanish) and Ms McKeown (English) combined forces to deliver lunchtime workshops on Creative Writing and Translation Skills and offered regular feedback to support the efforts of our budding linguists. Language Ambassadors in Lower Sixth also attended a workshop to offer their advice and experiences when translating texts. A buddy system was also put in place to support participants with specific queries and encourage peer to peer support.

“The students involved invested considerable time and created well-crafted, entertaining stories. Well done to all involved,” said Miss Arbonés.
