Speech & Drama

WELCOME TO SPEECH AND DRAMA at the Grange Junior School. Our Speech and Drama lessons are an additional fee to join. We aim not only to develop children’s public speaking and performance skills, but also help children grow in confidence, explore their imaginations and practice key communication skills. Our inclusive programme is for all abilities, and is taught by two industry professionals, Mrs Laura Newnes and Mr Ollie Hale, with combined professional experience in acting, directing, producing, choreography and musical direction. Speech and Drama lessons are very popular at the Junior School and we have a waiting list, with parents usually signing children up from Reception year to join us in year 3.

At the Grange Junior School, we follow the Trinity Speech and Drama syllabus and find that their graded examinations and certificates offer the widest range of performance and communication skills – encompassing all aspects of Drama and Speech. Children take 2 exams a year in either, acting, speech and drama or paired exams.

Year 4 & 6 Productions

Once a year the children in years 4 and 6 will have 3 weeks off curriculum time to rehearse and perform a production at The Grange Theatre. Mrs Newnes and Mr Hale work closely with the artistic director of The Grange Theatre, Mr Thomas Frith and direct, choreograph, and produce each production. Children can choose to audition for roles, or they can be a part of our ensemble cast. After the success of our last production of ‘Matilda’, the children are very excited to find out the title of next term’s production.

Art

THE ART CURRICULUM AT THE Grange Junior School is devised to inspire all forms of creativity from Reception to Year 6. The terms ‘I see’, ‘I think’ and ‘I wonder’ are the basis of all art investigations into developing an understanding of the world around us. Pupils are introduced to the work of sculptors, painters, printmakers and illustrators and begin to make comparisons within their own work. Pupils experiment with a variety of media and introduced techniques that supports confidence in expressing themselves. Our Art studio is a fabulous well- equipped resource for teaching and for enrichment opportunities.
