The atmosphere in the classroom was electric as pupils at The Grange Junior School discovered they had secured a place in the Science Quiz Club National Finals

It is a remarkable achievement and a first in the school’s history. Competing against more than 200 schools nationwide, the talented team finished an impressive 10th place in the opening round, earning a coveted spot in the semi-finals held by Quiz Club. They then went on to place 9th out of 50 schools, securing their place in the prestigious finals at the University of Oxford this June.

The team, made up of Aadya and Carlo from Year 5, alongside James N and Millie from Year 6, demonstrated exceptional scientific knowledge, teamwork and composure under pressure.

Following strict competition rules, the quizzes are conducted live with absolutely no teacher assistance allowed, meaning every answer relies entirely on the pupils’ own understanding and quick thinking. Huge congratulations to the team.

Gayle Ruddick - Head of Science The Grange Junior School

The team has also benefited enormously from the guidance and enthusiasm of Gayle Ruddick, the Junior School’s specialist Science teacher. Having dedicated subject specialist teachers at primary age is still relatively unusual, and it gives Grange pupils the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding and genuine passion for subjects from an early stage. Lessons are brought to life through hands-on investigation and experimentation in the school’s fully equipped science laboratory, where pupils are encouraged to question, explore and think like real scientists. This inspiring approach helps nurture both confidence and curiosity, providing children with experiences that go far beyond the traditional classroom.

Teachers and parents alike are incredibly proud of the pupils’ dedication and enthusiasm for science. Their success highlights the school’s commitment to nurturing curiosity, confidence and academic excellence from an early age. The entire Grange community will be cheering them on as they prepare for the national finals.
