Creative Arts

The subjects that make up our Creative Arts team are here to help our students' creative passions grow, let natural talents reach their full potential and turn innovative ideas into reality.

Drama

Drama at the Grange is for all regardless of ability or experience. If you want to be involved, then we will find the best role for you, whether that is on stage or behind the scenes.

For those who wish to study drama, we offer it as a GCSE where students study different styles of theatre and influential playwrights through practical and theoretical work.

With our own purpose-built and flexible 350 seat theatre, our students’ imaginations come to life and their creativity is allowed to flourish.

Enrichment

There is always something happening; we have two annual productions; a biennial House Drama competition; and a Theatre Club which caters for performers and technicians. There are also regular theatre trips, visiting theatre companies and workshops.

Our students are involved in every aspect of production – performance (including singing and dancing); lighting; sound; costume and make-up; stage management and front of house.

We offer, for an additional fee, Trinity Drama and Speech lessons on a peripatetic basis, working towards twice yearly examinations.

Music

The Music Department is an extremely happy, vibrant and busy place. Two full-time members of staff and a team of 17 peripatetic teachers ensure that music remains an important and ever-present part of life at The Grange.

Academic music is taught throughout the school, becoming an optional choice in Year 9 alongside all other Creative Arts. At Key Stage 3, students enjoy a project-based approach to learning music. Results at both GCSE and A-Level are, invariably, excellent, with 100% A*-A in 2018 at A Level, and 71% grade 7-9 at GCSE.

Enrichment

Beyond the classroom, one of the great strengths of Music at The Grange is its inclusivity and diversity. All students have the opportunity to join instrumental ensembles, choirs or other ensembles.

Evening Concerts occur both in-house, often in the wonderful space of The Grange Theatre, and within the local community; performing slots are open to all students in the school community, from year 7 to Upper 6th. Recent large works include Fauré’s Requiem, Dvorak’s Mass in D, and Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man.

Students also enjoy the opportunity to take their music further afield, both regionally and internationally, with recent touring destinations including Edinburgh, Ypres and Bruges, and Dublin, and a joint-choirs tour to Paris planned for July 2019.

Art and Textiles

Art and Textiles at The Grange School are aimed at developing and inspiring the individual to express what they see and understand of the world around them. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their work in producing work using a wide range of media and methodologies.

The Art and Textiles department does not have a ‘house style’ because everything is designed to cater to each individual and their specific learning requirements. The facilities are well equipped, we have our own IT suite, a laser cutter, etching press and screen printing facilities, all of which supplement established techniques and skills.

Graphics

Innovation, technology and creative thinking in the 21st Century are driven by visual communication. Society interacts and communicates in a drastically different way to how it did just 10 years ago with graphic design at the heart of it, which is why we teach it at The Grange.

A graphics curriculum offers students the chance to explore their creativity through a variety of mediums. These include illustration, photography, film & animation, advertising & packaging and print/digital media.

Our facilities give students a space to develop their own ideas and creations. From the latest IT design software to 3D printers, with our expert and experienced teaching staff we can help spark our students’ inner inventor.
