Building on the wave of momentum from last summer’s fantastic Henley Royal Regatta, Grange athletes are once again proving themselves to be among the elite young rowers in the country.

Year 12 students Pete Masters and Holly Andrews travelled to Nottingham to compete in the Great Britain Under 19 trials on Sunday 26th April and their outstanding performances now see them heading to the final selection process for the Junior World Championships later this summer.

The Road to Nottingham

The path to a GB trial is not for the faint-hearted. Before even setting foot in Nottingham, athletes must meet rigorous benchmark "ergo" standards over both 2km and 5km distances. The trials are a true test of stamina. Competitors race in singles over a 2km course, navigating a gruelling schedule that includes a time trial, a semi-final, and a final - all packed into a single day of high-stakes racing.

Elite Performances

Both Pete and Holly rose to the occasion, competing against the fastest junior rowers in the UK. Their results speak for themselves:
Pete secured a magnificent 6th place in the 'A' Final, while Holly delivered a tremendous performance to finish 3rd in the 'B' Final, placing her 9th overall.

These fantastic performances mean that both athletes are in the top 10 in the country!

A Vision for the Future

What makes these results particularly exciting for The Grange is that both Pete and Holly are currently in Year 12.

“To have two athletes from the Grange in the top 10 nationally is a fantastic achievement,” says Director of Rowing, Gareth Ireland. “Both students train incredibly hard and are inspiring the next generation of young Grange rowers with their trailblazing performances. It is very exciting to think that Pete and Holly both have another year ahead of them as junior rowers next season.”

Global Horizons

The journey doesn’t end here. Their standout performances have earned them a place in the final crew formation process this July. This is the final selection stage for the Junior World Championships, set to take place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from August 6th–9th.

Looking further ahead, both Pete and Holly are eyeing international academic careers. They are currently in discussions with several prestigious Ivy League Universities in the United States, exploring sporting scholarships that would allow them to compete at the highest collegiate level.

We look forward to seeing where their dedication takes them next. Whether on the River Weaver or the world stage in Bulgaria, the whole school community is behind them. Follow their journey on Instagram and the Grange Rowing website
